Category: Art by Madison Woods
All of my paintings feature Ozark pigments I’ve collected by hand and processed into paints. I use titanium oxide pigment to make white for adjusting and blending oil paints made from the Ozark pigments.
When I travel, I also gather rocks from those locations. When I make paint with rocks from other locations, the scene will be one from the homeland of the pigment, and the pigment sources will be specified in my process page or product listing if they are not Ozark colors.

Kings River | Scenes that Inspire Art
We live in the neighborhood of upper Kings River, in Madison county near the Newton county line (Arkansas). Kings River Falls are not too far away as the crow flies. The landscape here is rocky heart of the Boston Mountain range Ozarks, with very little flat ground away from the river valleys. Our 160 acres…

Update on the Gecko Paintings
I’m in the process of painting the third of three different geckos for a ‘Unique Pet’ portrait commission. I’m almost finished now with the painting phase of this project. After the last little gecko is finished, I’ll frame them and mount the pigment sample rocks on the frame. Finally, the backs will be professionally finished…

Painted with the Ozark Pigments | Collecting pigments everywhere
It seems like I pick up rocks everywhere I go. Now I do it with an eye for color. So far, I’ve only painted with the Ozark pigments. But, I collect pigment rocks everywhere I go. So eventually, I want to paint scenes from those locations with the pigments native to that place. Even the…

Art Goals | Life Goals, and my Word of the Year – Wild Ozark 2023
The image associated with this post is a single screech owl, but two photos taken successively. In one shot the owls’s eyes were closed and in the other they were open. So I put them together because there’s a lot of symbolism in there that applies to my approach for 2023 art goals and life…

Am I a Tonalist? I think so, when it comes to landscapes.
It’s always been hard for me to categorize my art, because the colors look different than a lot of contemporary art I see. So I began looking at historical works and styles and I think I’ve found something – a style of painting called Tonalism. Distinguishing characteristics of this kind of painting include limited palette…

Suck it up, Buttercup
This whole year has been a busy one and I’m glad it’s time to wind it down. There’s still a lot of catching up to do, though, because for the past several weeks I feel like I’ve been running non-stop. And this is my after-the-fact whining, grumble-grumble post about the recent event in Rogers. I…

2022 NWA Boutique Show in Rogers, Arkansas
For the past few months I’ve been preparing for this weekend. I’m excited to be a vendor at the NWA Boutique Show in Rogers, Arkansas. I’ve never attended or vended this show before, so I’m not sure what to expect. But from the list of other vendors that’ll be there, it sounds like a Christmas…

Beech Tree Leaves
It’s the time of year when most of the beautiful autumn colors are now brown and crunch on the ground. The oaks are burnt orange and beautiful, still. But the beech trees are at peak splendor with their golden beech tree leaves. Golden Splendor And finally, to cap off my post, here’s a photo of…

Is Art made through Magic, Intuition, or Knowledge?
I once heard it spoken in one of the great (virtual) hallways where educated artists gather, that an ‘intuitive artist’ doesn’t exist. That an artist only uses knowledge and conscious decisions to know what to do on their canvas – no mystery involved. The idea, of whether that is true or not, lodged like a…

Highlander and Longhorn Cow | Painting Process for ‘Best Friends’
Every year for their birthdays, the grandkids pick the subject they want me to paint. And every time we do this, their requests are getting more and more challenging. The latest one I’ve started is a scene that includes two cows. Not just any cows, but a longhorn and a highlander. I make a print…

Making Time to Wander
One of the reasons I enjoy my Morning Mile so much is because of the walk back to the house. It’s my time to wander. It’s the wandering that feeds my soul and spirit, whereas the jog out does my body good. I need both. After a few days of not having the time to…

Ozark Pigments in Oils | First Paintings
For a long time I’ve wanted to try painting in oils, and I’ve wanted to see how the Ozark pigments in oils would look. My biggest hope was that the colors were more vivid and I would be able to layer more paint into a painting. My biggest fear was the mess it would make,…

Planting Bamboo and Harvesting Passionflower
Today I planted out some little bamboo plants that I bought from a seller on Etsy. It wasn’t really plants, but sections of roots that are supposed to grow into plants. I started them in pots a few weeks ago, six in all, and two of them sent out tiny shoots this week. So I…

Sharing the Awe | The Reason for My Art
A large part of my reason for doing art is that it gives me a means for sharing the awe I feel when I create something. Since I began working with these Ozark pigments, the level of wonder and amazement I experience has increased exponentially. Same when it comes to making sculptures and beads with…

Provenance of a Paint
Most of my paints begin with a rock. Sometimes I remember to record the process it goes through from rock to paint, and sometimes the process isn’t quick. This is the story of a paint made from a reddish sandstone found here at Wild Ozark. It’s the provenance of Number 2021-01. I’m still working with…
