Yesterday I went out with my daughter (broker/agent Gabrielle Hill) and friend (agent Rebekah Simonton) to see a beautiful, wild & rugged Newton County (Arkansas) property they’d recently listed with our agency Montgomery Whiteley Realty. The photos below are from two adjacent properties, both available at the time of this posting.
If you’d like to see this land, let me know! I’d be happy to take you on a hike. While we’re at it, I’d also be happy to point out the various native plants that grow out there. More details, and agent contact info is down below.
I wasn’t prepared for the hike this involved, but as we made our way down, down, down the old Forest Service road, I began to suspect that it would be a devil of a hike on the way out. And whew! It was. But if I did that more often, I’d get in shape pretty quickly.
Wild & Rugged Newton County Arkansas
Convergence of Newton county waters
The goal: to reach the convergence of the East fork of the Little Buffalo River and Barberry Creek. There’s something special about convergences, and this particular one is on the 67.8 acre listing. There is an adjacent 35 acre listing that we crossed through on the way to the river. Part of Barberry Creek passes through the 35 acre parcel, as well.
The entire hike in was downhill, through the 35 acre parcel towards the creek and river valley. Of course, a long downhill hike leads to an equally long uphill hike, if you want to get back out.
We noticed on the way, spots of colors on the rocks in the road and guessed that it was the bottom of a kayak or two that someone had recently hauled in there. I found myself wishing I’d been dragging a kayak, too, so I wouldn’t have to hike the uphill way back out… But then I’d probably wash up wet and cold somewhere downstream and have an even longer and harder hike awaiting me. I’ve never tried kayaking before.
The beauty was well worth the dread of hiking out. But I forgot to get a photo of the convergence!
Native Woodland Plants
Here’s photos of the other things that caught my eye, though.
Pigment Rocks
Of course, at the creek, I couldn’t resist doing a little scrape on this rock. These are perfect for making earthy paints, and it’s very much like the rocks I use to make mine from our creeks, too.
Here’s a FB post that Gab made about our hike. She didn’t get a pic of the convergence either, but she does have other scenes that I didn’t get pictures of, including her dog Haggie the Aussie that accompanied us on the trail.
What Else in Newton County is Nearby?
The nearest town is Deer, Arkansas. From there, it’s only a short drive to Jasper, Arkansas and the Buffalo National River, which is where the annual Elk Festival is held. From Jasper, take the winding, scenic Highway 7 to Ponca, where there’s more access to the Buffalo. Boxley Valley isn’t far away from there. Between Ponca and Boxley, the elk come out into the fields, cross the roads, and give the public photo opportunities.
Hiking, horseback trails, kayaking/canoeing, elk viewing, waterfalls, and historic buildings are all throughout this area. It’s no wonder that it is one of the most popular outdoor fun destinations in Arkansas.
