Category: Art by Madison Woods
All of my paintings feature Ozark pigments I’ve collected by hand and processed into paints. I use titanium oxide pigment to make white for adjusting and blending oil paints made from the Ozark pigments.
When I travel, I also gather rocks from those locations. When I make paint with rocks from other locations, the scene will be one from the homeland of the pigment, and the pigment sources will be specified in my process page or product listing if they are not Ozark colors.

Equestrian Property for sale near Kingston, Arkansas
Would you like to live in a small town area, where there’s beauty everywhere you look? Madison county, Arkansas offers such an opportunity. Kingston, Arkansas specifically is my favorite small town. That’s why I chose here when I ran for the hills myself almost two decades ago. At the moment, I know of two ready…

Cooper’s Hawk | a Blue-eyed Juvenile
Currently on my easel is a portrait in progress of a gorgeous blue-eyed juvenile Cooper’s hawk. As he matures, his eyes will change to yellow, orange, or red. Tamalyn Wortham, Photographer “The story behind it is…. I was sitting in my car and looked down. It was right outside my door. I couldn’t even get…

The first painting off of the easel this decade is a bald eagle, and it’s the first of the eagles in my series of raptors in Ozark pigments.

Four of Wands
This is an example of the imagery that arises when I let my imagination guide my artwork. It’s one of the earlier paintings I did after finding out I could make paint from the rocks here, titled “Four of Wands”. The trunks of the trees represent the Wands you’d find in a tarot deck suite.…

2024 Reopening the Wild Ozark Studio & Gallery
Yesterday was the first day open at the Wild Ozark Studio & Gallery after being closed since right before Christmas last year. We’ve had some warmer weather and the time felt right. But this morning it was 33*F when I crawled out of bed and went out to feed the horses. I hoped it would…

My Growth as an Artist
My first painting was in summer of 2018 while I was visiting my husband who was working in Qatar at the time. I didn’t have many art supplies on hand – only the first set of paints I’d ever made and one brush that I bought from an art supply shop out there. It’s been…

Little Rock Pile on the Counter
When I walk around out here, I’m always finding rocks that I like for some reason or other. Sometimes, it’s a good pigment source. Sometimes, there’s a fossil imprint I like. If it’s small enough, it comes home with me and I add it to my little rock piles on the counter. Now, a person…

Broad-wing Hawk #2 | Dinner Time
I’ve begun broad-wing hawk #2, using the same sized canvas and a similar background as the first one. Since this one has just nabbed a frog, the title is ‘Dinner Time’. My reference is a photo by the excellent photographer Tammy Block. I have permission to use the photo, and she gets 10% on the…

New Business Cards
This year I needed two separate business cards for two separate businesses. One for real estate and one for artwork. But I can’t believe I forgot to put an email or contact number on my art card. I’ll update it once I need to re-order. Perhaps anyone interested will be interested enough to visit my…

Painting a Branch, Pouring Water from Pigment
Today I’ll be painting a branch, the one my hawk is perched upon. But before I do that, there’s one feather I forgot to add. It’s on the tail and it’s making everything look off to not see it there. So I’ll add that first. Here’s the pigments I’ve put on my palette for today.…

Painting on a Rainy Day
The weather outside is unsuitable for doing much else, but it’s perfectly right for painting on a rainy day. I’ve also been making paints for my 2024 Soul of the Ozarks watercolor collection. But that involves little more than waiting for pigments to settle right now. Here’s where I am with my current painting on…

Making Gray Paint from Shale
One of the pigment resources I use from the land around Wild Ozark is a dark gray shale. We’re located where a geological formation called Fayetteville Shale spreads beneath and around. Most people associate it with natural gas and oil. For me, it means a beautiful gray paint. The process of turning shale to paint…

Gearing up to make some paint
Today is the last day of January. Yesterday we had errands in town to run and that took up the whole day. Tomorrow we’ve got to go back out to town again. It’s time for annual physicals, which I don’t particularly want to do but hubs has to go for his so I might as…

Finished a Large Cow Painting
This is Brahman Mama #905. I’ve been working on her for a little under two weeks. This morning, she’s finished. Here’s the progression page for her if you like to see all of the steps from blank canvas to final strokes. She’s the second large cow painting I’ve ever done in grayscale. This one is…

Brahman Mama #905 | Cow Art
Today is Wednesday (Jan 17, 2024) and there’s still snow on the ground outside from last week’s arctic blast. The horses and cat are fed, husband and myself already had breakfast, and the hot water lines are still frozen, along with the toilet, washing machine, shower, and bathtub lines. Yesterday I finished making the bone…

Classical Art that I Love
I’ve found more classical art that I adore. You know, I took an art appreciation class back when I was in college and I didn’t get the exposure I thought I might to the kinds of art I really love. But I follow a couple of accounts on Instagram that consistently post images of old-world…

Painting the rest of January, Paint-Making in February
I’ve got a cow and a broad-winged hawk on the easel. Coming up, there’s handmade paint orders to fill in February. So, I’ll be painting for the rest of January and then switch over to paint-making in February. I’ll probably still have time to pick up a brush next month, too, though. Or at least…

Drafty Windows as Windowsill Refrigerator
All of the things I dislike about cold weather are related to being uncomfortable. Being cold makes everything harder to do, especially when fingers and feet are numb and ready to warm up by the fire. However, the cold does offer some conveniences, too. A windowsill refrigerator is one of them. Yes, I’m stretching for…

Free Will | Broad-winged Hawk #1

Warm Winter Fires & Charred Bones for Pigment
The last time I made charred bones in the woodstove was when Rob was still working overseas. So, when I presented by foil-wrapped tin box to put beneath the fire he was building yesterday morning, it was a new request to him. “Are you serious?” he asked. “Yeah,” I said. “Just put it under the…

Rainy Day Rambles
This morning it was above freezing, but soon after the sun rose, the wind started. Gusty winds must’ve cause a line to touch something somewhere, because the lights went out briefly. It had flickered a few times before that, but I thought it was just the light in the kitchen. Soon after, the rain and…

Brahman Cow Art | Painting Little Red
Today is start a new painting day. It seems that I’m building a collection of Brahman cow art works. This is Little Red. Not so little anymore, though. It’s a Brahman that belongs to one of my granddaughters who has a birthday soon. So I’m painting her favorite cow. Her Mother, my daughter, raises this…

Today is Oil Paint Making Day
Before I get started on the next art piece, I need to make some tubes of color. So today is oil paint-making day. I’ve already got the rocks crushed and pigments washed, so all I need to do is add the oil, mull on the plate until they’re smooth, and put them in the tubes.…
